The Movie That Was Written And Directed By Woody Allen !

What a throughly engrossing evening Woody Allen has provided. This film has been, by and large, poorly received by the British critics. I cannot understand why. Yes, it does have the strongest echoes of Crimes and Misdemeanours, but if a director/writer can't borrow from his own product, who can? This isn't funny Allen -- there are few laughs -- but it is an extremely intense and successful serious Allen.

Does Allen's magic transfer to my home city? You bet it does; lovely locations; Notting Hill, the Tate Modern, the "Gherkin" in the City, all look great but are also entirely relevant. Many critics said he didn't have an ear for British dialogue. I simply don't hear that -- it may be a bit stagy at times, but the writing is spare, to the point, and literate. Few trans-Atlantic clunkers.

Yes, there are some silly bits; bits where you wish any half-intelligent Englishman had watched the film and said "Wood, old son, this is cobblers". British detectives don't call themselves "Detective so-and-so". They might be Detective-Sergeant or whatever. The force that polices London is the Metropolitan Police, not the "London Police". Perhaps Allen didn't realise that his main copper, Ulster actor James Nesbitt, sounds a parody of the amusing roles he plays in some widely-seen British Yellow Pages adverts. Little things, so easy to iron out, that detract just a touch from credibility.

Scarlett Johannsson -- what an actress, is she really only 20 or whatever? She packs huge power and stunning looks, if occasionally getting a trifle near Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. Jonathan Rhys Myers does his forlorn sports coach bit, as from Bend It Like Beckham. The solidly Brit supporting cast is entirely believable, even if their effortlessly affluent lifestyle takes a bit of swallowing. Genuine surprises at the end. This is a thoroughly satisfying evening at the movies.

" Munich " The Golden Globe Nominee

Like the great hitchcock or kubrick spielberg has remained at the top of his game for quite some time. the man simply knows how to tell a great story. munich like pretty much every other spielberg film is a genuine masterpiece. he accomplished the 70's theme with ease it seemed, and the casting was stellar. It is Bana's best performance to date. Daniel Craig delivered a surprisingly great performance and Rush was on point as always. The gritty look of the film and kaminski's brilliant cinematography deliver one dynamite package. my only complaint is that it seemed a bit long and some of the scenes dragged on a bit. Overall a 9/10 seems like a fair vote for spielberg's Munich.

The Inside Of " Syriana ".

Syriana, starring Matt Damon and George Clooney, reveals a possible honesty in foreign political corruption. The movie starts out a bit discombobulating, but the ending unleashes a truism in our society. Directed and written by Stephen Gaghan (Screenplay for Traffic 2000), the script for Syriana shows not only a smart liberal-approached storyline, but also how much the American and Arabian lives becomes juxtaposed by oil politics. Based on the non-fiction book "See No Evil" by Robert Baer, Syriana takes its viewer step by step through the birth and processes of terrorism; and tears at the roots from where all violence and corruption derives.

The movie starts with the introduction of a character, Bob (George Clooney), an American CIA agent who works in the Middle East for years witnessing the destruction of social injustice. The movie then turns light to the American governmental affairs and its due process to make oil business proposals and governmental decisions to promote oil driven businesses in the Middle East. Bryan (Matt Damon) struggling to survive in America's capitalistic society thrives to introduce business opportunities in the Middle East; but before completing any deals with reformer and leader, Prince Nasir, all the characters, including a young Arabic man suffering from American politics and social injustices, end up experiencing sacrifices beyond comprehensible.

The movie leaves its audience stunned with a raw realism that the world we live is not a pretty picture, and all the beliefs you trust can be questionable. Although the movie definitely wouldn't exactly be a "feel good movie", its thought provoking and enlightening, and I don't think it was ever meant to be a "feel good movie." The movie shows a perspective worth learning, considering and understanding. And although the movie takes the viewer through a roller-coaster of different lives and people objectives at the beginning of the film, the movie ties in brilliantly to connect not only the characters lives, but the lives of the audience and everyone's lives who have capitalistic motives.

Well Isn't This True ?

The Photo That My Mum Asked Me To Get Her Today

Jean Guichard is a French photographer best known for his lighthouse photographs.

The following report was written by Timothy Harrison and appeared on May 18, 2001 in the Lighthouse Depot publication in Wells, Maine.

"For the first time ever in the United States, the famous French photographer, Jean Guichard, will be making a personal appearance to autograph his world famous lighthouse prints.

"He is best known for his explosive 'Wave' photograph of a lighthouse, off the coast of Brittany, France, showing a keeper at the door about to be engulfed by a titanic wave. The photograph is truly one of the most recognizable lighthouse photographs in the world. When first seeing the famous photograph, most people assume that the lighthouse keeper must have been killed.

"In fact, the keepers had been living in fear of death during the 1989 storm and at one point had taken refuge in the lantern room of the tower. Waves the night before had smashed through the lower windows of the tower, causing the structure to flood, washing away everything in its path including the television, table, chairs, coffee maker and even the refrigerator. The keepers in fact were waiting to be rescued by helicopter.

"As Jean Guichard
s helicopter approached the tower he was unaware that the keepers were waiting for a rescue helicopter. Guichard was simply there to take photographs of the waves pounding the structure. The keepers heard the sound of the helicopter and naturally assumed it was the rescue helicopter. One of the keepers opened the lower door of the structure and as he looked up at the helicopter and realized that it was not the rescue chopper, he also realized that a giant wave was about to engulf the tower. He immediately turned about and pulled the door closed behind him. Had he not done so at that second, he surely would have been killed. While all this was happening, Jean Guichard was busy taking photographs as fast as he could click the camera, thus capturing on film the most dramatic action shots ever taken at a lighthouse.

"Since the lighthouses are now automated and no longer have any lighthouse keepers, these photos are now also of historic value and with Guichard
s autograph are sure to become a wonderful collectible."

My Favourite Super Hero's From When I Was A Boy

From Heartbreak To Triumph On Brokeback Mountain

Based on a short story by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Proulx, director Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain is a poignant tale of forbidden love. Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) are two young men who meet while herding sheep in the high country of Wyoming in the 1960s, setting off a complex and heartrending relationship that lasts more than 20 years. Dylan Tichenor, editor of Brokeback Mountain , describes the film's emotional core: “Ang tried to make an American love story without any sort of modifier on it, and that's what he did. Sure, it's a gay love story. The characters are cowboys, but it's not what you might think. This movie is universally applicable. You forget it's about two guys; it's about the fate of two hearts. It transcends gender.”

As moving as this tale is on screen, there was an emotional story in the editing suite as well. Editor Gerri Peroni, who began editing the film, passed away toward the end of production, and Tichenor, who had worked as Peroni's assistant early in his career, took over. “It was a great way to honor Gerri - working with her material on the movie,” says Tichenor, who shares editing credit with Peroni on the film. “When I was an assistant, I worked almost exclusively with her [on The Player , Short Cuts , and Prêt-à-Porter ], and that is part of what makes our work on Brokeback Mountain work together. We have similar sensibilities in terms of pacing, and so on. I looked at all the dailies and understood why she chose what she chose. I would have made the same choices. She had done a fair amount of assembling, and a lot of her work remains in the film.”

Peroni had used an Avid Film Composer XL system, so Tichenor - who has 12 years of editing experience on Avid editing systems - was able to quickly get up to speed when he joined the project shortly after production ended. The dailies and assemblies were organized in a familiar bin structure that enabled him to quickly view and access all of the source material and initial cuts. First assistant Kimberly Tomes and assistant Beth Moran each used a Film Composer XL system as well and they - along with two editing room assistants, Kate Abernathy and Geoff Sledge - were essential to the editing process.

“This movie is universally applicable. You forget it's about two guys; it's about the fate of two hearts.”

- Dylan Tichenor, Editor, Brokeback Mountain

A Universal Story

With a script from Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana and outstanding performances from Ledger and Gyllenhaal, as well as from Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway, who play their wives, the story hinges on the rich development of characters. “I think this is a movie about nuance and performances,” says Tichenor, who worked side by side with Lee in the editing room, using the Film Composer system as a tool to evaluate takes and explore creative options together in day-long sessions. “[Crafting nuance and performance] is something I take pride in; something I try to be good at. Ang was also incredibly generous during this process. He's very open to what people think, and he really valued my opinion. Working with Ang was a great experience for me. He has such depth of understanding of story.”

Tichenor continues, “It was especially important to craft this material into what people say the film has become - a universal love story. We didn't want the homosexuality to be pushed over the top. Editorially, it was about how much interest do they show in each other and when. How many looks were exchanged? Were there enough, but not too many looks? You want their first get-together to be a surprise, but not totally out of the blue. All of that is about crafting performance and story arc. It also takes place over a long period; the story spans 20 some-odd years. These characters go from being kids to being adults with kids of their own. The challenge was how to show the passage of time and go through, with a sort of shorthand, the story of the rest of their lives.”

Because of the film's relatively small budget of $13 million, the filmmakers agreed to control costs by foregoing film prints for dailies and screenings. Instead, all of the dailies were screened on the Film Composer system, and studio screening tapes were output to DVCAM directly from the Film Composer system. The quality of the Film Composer system's on-screen images and output enabled the filmmakers to work in the exacting detail required to create this visually striking film, which includes a range of scenes, from quiet private sequences to sweeping vistas that establish the raw beauty of the American West.

“The juxtapositions in this film - from the intimacy of two people to the vastness of the natural landscape - was emphasized by the wind.”

- Eugene Gearty, Supervising Sound Editor, Brokeback Mountain

Expansive Filmmaking

Some of the outdoor scenes required effects work to add specific visual touches to the landscape to match the storyline – for example, to enhance the shape or color of the clouds or to add hail. The Film Composer system's ability to easily handle these effects sequences was essential. “We did all the comps in the Avid,” says Tichenor, who worked closely with Montreal-based Buzz Image Group, a visual effects house that created approximately 75 effects shots for the film. “We made temp comps and gave them to Buzz with QuickTime references and DVCAMs, plus count sheets in FileMaker Pro. They give us back QuickTime sequences for the Avid and Cineon [files] for film out.”

Tichenor is quick to praise the skillful visual effects created by Buzz Image Group. He explains, “Buzz did a tremendous amount of work: sky replacements, set extensions, erasures. But the big thing was sheep replication. 700 sheep were on set; we needed 2,500 in some scenes.”

With the help of more than a dozen CG animation artists using multiple SOFTIMAGE|XSI 3D animation workstations, the artistic team at Buzz Image Group created approximately 15 shots with 3D sheep. Louis Morin, visual effects supervisor, visited the Calgary set several times during production to fully research the landscape and the shots required.

“Ang Lee is a master filmmaker and quite a perfectionist as far as framing,” says Morin, who worked tirelessly to create 3D shots that blended seamlessly with the film's natural scenic beauty, beautifully captured by cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto. “We did CG sheep enhancements in some shots - adding sheep in the mid-ground and background - and a couple of shots that were all CG. If we've done our job correctly, no one will know what we've done.”

The visual effects team, which included lead CG artist Pierre-Simon Lebrun-Chaput, lead compositor François Métivier, and compositor Ara Khanikian, relied on the SOFTIMAGE|XSI system's customization features to tailor the animation tools to help replicate clusters of 3D sheep while avoiding any visible patterns. “We used some in-house scripting, which worked well for this project. Scripting made the job easier, faster to render, and very manageable. SOFTIMAGE|XSI was the perfect tool for this size job,” he says.

The sounds of the American West were also vital for establishing the desired emotional backdrop for this story. “I would say that the critical sound component of the movie for Ang was wind,” says supervising sound editor Eugene Gearty, who also acted as sound designer, sound editor, and re-recording mixer on the film. “It was the most interesting, dramatic, and affecting sound that we worked with throughout the film. The juxtapositions in this film - from the intimacy of two people to the vastness of the natural landscape - were emphasized by the wind. We wanted to tell this story through the power of the wind - through nature's forces.”

Gearty relied on a Digidesign Pro Tools|HD system and its ability to work in 5.1 surround sound to fully develop everything from house-rattling gales to short, quick gusts. He also relied on the wide-ranging abilities of the Pro Tools system to handle multiple audio processes within one easy-to-use tool. “Because I'm the sound editor/sound designer/sound supervisor/mixer, I work with everything in a 5.1 pre-mixing environment. With Pro Tools, I can come up with a sound, balance it, and mix it all at once. You find yourself creating and designing while you are cutting. This was especially useful when I was working with Ang and Dylan, and I could make changes and show them everything at once. Using Pro Tools, there is a lot of room for creativity,” says Gearty, who shared supervising sound editing responsibilities with Phil Stockton at C5 in New York .

C5 also handled Foley, ADR, dialogue editing, and pre-mixing using a variety of Digidesign Pro Tools products, including multiple Pro Tools|HD and Pro Tools LE systems. As with the SOFTIMAGE|XSI files that were used for 3D animation, audio files from the Pro Tools systems were easily exchanged with the Film Composer system for an easy collaborative workflow.

An American Epic

Tichenor used an Avid editing system for the first time in 1993, working as an assistant on Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle . “The Avid is an extension of my fingertips at this point. I use a lot of keyboard shortcuts. I couldn't be any faster on it. It's just waiting on me,” he says.

On his current film, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford , Tichenor's setup includes three Avid Film Composer systems and the Avid Unity MediaNetwork shared-storage solution. He also plans to use an Avid Symphony Nitris system for HD screenings. “I can't wait to be editing on HD soon,” he says.

Wherever his interests take him, Avid systems will likely be there to help him achieve his goals. “Avid is an amazing program. It's revolutionized the art form. I just hope people realize that we do more things than ever as a result; not just faster, but more,” he says.

On Brokeback Mountain , Tichenor appears to have done plenty. This poetic epic has already received the prestigious Golden Lion Award at the 2005 Venice Film Festival and is widely anticipated to be one of the critical hits of the season.

“I'm just really proud of this movie. It meant a lot to me personally,” says Tichenor. “I was a huge fan of the story, which I read in a Best American Short Stories collection. When I heard Ang was doing the film, I thought ‘That is perfect.' When I heard Gerri was cutting it, I thought, ‘Great, that's perfect.' It was a crazy confluence of events that I ended up on this film, and it was a great experience on so many levels. Making this story into a film was a really tall order - and I think it really works.”

A Few Words Of Wisdom From Bill Gates Himself

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair – get used to it!

Rule 2: The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of school. You won’t be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they call it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent’s generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.

The Bird Eating Spider Is A Type Of Trapdoor Spider

The Bird Eating Spider is one of Australia's largest spiders. It is also known as the Barking Spider or Whistling Spider. The barking or whistling sound is a warning when the spider is disturbed and is made by rubbing their palps with their fangs. Selenocosmia Crassipes is its Latin name, and it is closely related to the Barking Spiders of South America. A mature female spider has body reaching a length of 60mm, the male is slightly smaller and slimmer than the female. The body of the male grows up to 40mm. The colour of the spider is various shades of rusty brown. It is considered a Tropical spider fairly widespread throughout Queensland and commonly found in Carins, Tully, Brisbane and Northern and Central parts of Australia. It is also found in New Guinea. This is the common species of the Theraphosidae family found in Australia. There are at least 4 kinds of the species found here. These spiders live under logs or in burrows which are 3cm wide and 60cm deep, which they line with silk. Sometimes a loose web is made around the entrance. Bird Eating Spiders kill their prey by pouncing on it and injecting venom. They eat insects, food is captured in the area near their burrows. Having no teeth, they rely on digestive juices to dissolve their food. The amazing thing about these spiders is that their digestive juices disolve scales and bone, there is little left of their prey once they have finished eating. When the spider has finished eating, the spider normally covers the entrance to their tunnel with web, sealing it. The web door remains until the spider is ready to eat again.

Funnel-Web Spider

Funnel-web spiders are distributed over a wide range of eastern Australia. They are found in the more humid areas of wet and dry sclerophyll forests and rainforests.

At least 13 people have been killed by Funnel-web spiders since 1927. An antivenom produced in 1980 by Dr Struan Sutherland has been successful in saving lives.

The venom of these spiders is peculiar in that it appears to only harm primates, and has virtually no effect upon cats and dogs. Symptoms of a bite consist of profuse sweating, local pain, anxiety, hairs standing on end, vomiting.

To avoid bites from spiders, wear gloves when gardening, shake bed clothes and clothing before use.

There are some 13 different types of Funnel-web: the A) Sydney Funnel-web B) Tree or Northern Funnel-web C) Toowoomba or Darling Downs Funnel-web are capable of causing death. Female Funnel-webs may produce up to 100 eggs in a cocoon-like egg sac.

This Is Probably Australia’s Best Known Spider, Having Inspired Song And Poetry.

This is probably Australia’s best known spider, having inspired song and poetry.

Red-backs adapt well to man-made environments: rubbish tips, under discarded iron sheets, cans and boxes. The female Red-back is dangerous, the male is harmless.

Red-back spider bites occur due to people leaving clothes lying about, the spider enters the clothing and bites when the clothing is put back on or people move rubbish, tins or timber sheets without wearing gloves, and the spider bites exposed skin.

Red-back spiders are small (10mm in body length). They may live for 10 years. They lay between 3 and 6 egg sacs between spring and autumn. Each sac may contain up to 300 eggs. The Red-back is known as the Katipo in N.Z. and the Black Widow in the U.S.A.

Curious About Spiders. This Is About Woof Spiders?

Wolf spiders are the largest spiders found in Nebraska. Their bodies are covered with short hairs in shades of brown, black, gray, white, yellow, or green. They do not make webs or web snares, but instead hunt for prey. Female wolf spiders often have bodies up to 1 1/2 inches long. Some of these spiders shelter under leaves or debris while others construct retreats in shallow tunnels or dig deep burrows.
Egg sacs of most wolf spiders are shaped like a ball (globular) and are carried by the female attached to her spinnerets. When the spiderlings (baby spiders) hatch, they climb onto their mother's back and ride there for several days before leaving.
Wolf spiders often alarm homeowners because they are large and move very quickly. We see most of these spiders in the fall when concerned homeowners find them in their garages or in and around the house. Wolf spiders are not "house spiders" and will likely die in the home. They are considered accidental invaders. These beneficial spiders can be removed and placed back outdoors where they belong.

As with any spider, do not pick them up with your bare hands. Place a cup over the spider, then gently slide a piece of paper or cardboard under the cup. You can then carry the cup with the spider outdoors and release it away from the home.
